The Energy Transition Plan: Taking Stock of Nigeria's Energy Transition Process Two Years On

With 2030 fast approaching, it is imperative to take stock of Nigeria’s performance against the objectives set out in the Energy Transition Plan (the ETP) that was published in August 2022. Notably, the ETP aims to provide modern energy services to Nigerians, promote a just, fair, equitable and inclusive energy transition process across Africa, as well as promote other energy transition initiatives.

In this article, we provide insights into the key objectives of the ETP, assessing the progress made so far in the power, oil and gas, industry, cooking and transportation sectors against these objectives, including the overarching objective of achieving net-zero emissions by 2060. Additionally, we have identified the gaps and challenges impeding the progress of Nigeria’s clean energy goals and proffered workable solutions that can be implemented to accelerate the accomplishment of the lofty aims of the ETP.
