We are excited to announce that, in collaboration with the team from Macmillan Keck Attorneys and Solicitors, our Celestina Nwabueze and Patrick Omodia successfully facilitated a two-day capacity-building session for the Nigerian Data Protection Commission on 16–17 October 2024.
This training delved into the fundamental concepts and principles of data protection, registration, fees, audits, notifications, assessments, handling complaints, investigations, and enforcement. Additionally, it explored amongst others, the responsibilities of data controllers and processors, particularly concerning cross-border data transfers and data breaches as well as the Commission’s role in fostering an environment of transparency, security, and trust in relation to data breaches.
The training was exceptional due to its practical focus. We explored international good practices, relevant case law, administrative decisions, and case studies to deepen participants’ understanding of the topics. The sessions also included interactive elements designed to effectively assess participants’ learning and engagement, ensuring that the staff of the Commission leave with practical insights and tools to implement in their respective roles.
Having contributed significantly to the drafting of the Nigeria Data Protection Act, 2023, it is our pleasure to continue advancing policy and institutional development in this area. We extend our sincere appreciation to the ID4D of the World Bank (ID4D), and the Nigeria Data Protection Commission, for putting together this impactful event.
