Biography

Chukwuebuka is a Senior Associate in the firm’s Dispute Resolution practice. He is a highly accomplished legal practitioner with deep expertise in litigation and alternative dispute resolution, particularly within the banking and commercial sectors. Known for his client-focused approach and innovative legal thinking, he is adept at navigating complex legal disputes with strategic precision. His academic journey is rooted in the rich traditions of both the Nigerian and English legal systems. He earned the prestigious Vice Chancellor’s Gold Award at Babcock University and later received the Ede & Ravenscroft Best International Student Prize at Coventry University. Chukwuebuka has served as lead counsel in over 70 matters across all levels of the Nigerian judiciary, earning accolades from both peers and members of the Bench for his advocacy and legal acumen. His track record includes high-stakes litigation and landmark appeals, often involving substantial financial implication.

 

Relevant Experience

  • Recovery Litigation (₦350M): Successfully argued an appeal for a leading commercial bank, in which he advocated that the debtor had impliedly admitted liability, thus establishing bank’s entitlement to the principal sum and interest on outstanding debts
  • Foreign Currency Dispute: Successfully led an appeal which overturned a High Court decision involving significant foreign currencies, reinforcing the evidentiary standard in banking disputes with respect to the probative value of bank statements
  • Fundamental Rights Enforcement: Successfully defended a leading bank in a fundamental rights suit, obtaining a judgment that clarified that the burden of proof in such a claim rest with the applicant
  • Environmental Nuisance Defence: Successfully defended a corporate client in a nuisance suit by highlighting the inconsistencies in the claimant’s case and conduct
  • Defamation Suit (Qualified Privilege): Obtained dismissal of a difficult defamation suit by establishing a rare form of qualified privilege (akin to self defence), by successfully deploying foreign decisions
  • Banking & EFCC Procedure: Successfully represented three banks in a breach of contract suit involving account freezing, obtaining judicial clarification of the role of EFCC orders in such matters
  • Electoral Law (Pre-Election Dispute): Successfully argued an objection on behalf of the Nigerian electoral commission, resulting in dismissal of the suit for time-barred
