Biography

Mitchell is a Managing Counsel and Team Lead in Olaniwun Ajayi LP’s Government Business Practice and co-lead of the Firm’s Arbitration team. His practice combines high-stakes domestic and international arbitration with complex financial and commercial advisory, positioning him as a versatile lawyer who bridges dispute resolution with strategic transactional support across diverse sectors. He has acted in complex arbitrations under the LCIA, UNCITRAL, and ad hoc rules across energy, aviation, and infrastructure. His investment arbitration experience includes advising on Netherlands–Nigeria BIT disputes involving expropriation, fair and equitable treatment, and significant environmental damage awards. He has also represented clients in a US$20 million LCIA arbitration and in an ad hoc arbitration under the European Development Fund (1990). In commercial arbitration, Mitchell has acted in high-value disputes in the energy sector, advised on Natural Gas Sale and Purchase Agreement arbitrations concerning take-or-pay obligations, and led aviation-related mandates involving the setting aside of a fraudulent arbitral award and resisting enforcement against aircraft assets. Mitchell has extensive experience in complex financial and commercial matters. He has led negotiations for debt restructuring exceeding US$400 million owed to multiple lenders, coordinated multi-jurisdictional legal strategies in high-stakes disputes, and supervised foreign counsel in enforcement resistance proceedings. He also regularly advises on cross-border debt exposures and the structuring of intricate financial transactions. His practice demonstrates a strong track record in dispute resolution, debt restructuring, and the design of effective legal and commercial solutions for sophisticated financial arrangements.
